New dating evidence of the early presence of hominins in Southern Europe

Objects are said to be in association with each other when they are found together in a context which suggests simultaneous deposition. Associations between objects are the basis for relative dating or chronology and the concept of cross-dating as well as in interpretation – cultural connections, original function, etc. Pottery and flint tools associated in a closed context would be grounds for linking them into an assemblage, possibly making the full material culture of a group available. The association of undated objects with artifacts of known date allows the one to be dated by the other. When two or more objects are found together and it can be proved that they were deposited together, they are said to be in genuine or closed association.

Rich assemblages of non-marine molluscs are described from the Lower Palaeolithic site at East Farm, Barnham, Suffolk. The assemblages from the upper levels of a channel infill Unit 5c reflect both aquatic and terrestrial habitats and indicate temperate conditions throughout the fossiliferous sequence.

The land snail fauna contains Discus ruderatus, which allows correlation with the lower part of the molluscan succession at the nearby Lower Palaeolithic site at Beeches Pit, West Stow. A tooth of pipistrelle bat Pipistrellus pipestrellus from the same deposits represents its only known occurrence from the British Hoxnian.

The molluscan assemblages from certain levels at Barnham had clearly suffered considerable post-mortem sorting and diagenesis. Not only were there huge differences in the representation of Bithynia shells and their opercula but the apertures of some shells showed evidence of significant recrystallization. Moreover, some of the opercula were slightly folded or even crumpled, indicating that they must once have been soft and deformable rather than hard and brittle.

Figure 1. Paleoanthropology , a subdiscipline of anthropology, is the study of extinct primates. While the majority of researchers doing this kind of work are anthropologists, paleontologists within the discipline of geology may also study fossil primates. The primary method used by paleoanthropologists is the analysis of fossil remains.

However, they increasingly rely on other scientific disciplines to gain a better understanding of the environmental forces that played a role in our evolution, as well as the formation of the fossil record.

The good dates are confirmed using at least two different methods, ideally involving multiple independent labs for each method to cross-check results.

Sometimes only one method is possible, reducing the confidence researchers have in the results. Kidding aside, dating a find is crucial for understanding its significance and relation to other fossils or artifacts.

Associations of benthic invertebrates from Potter Cove Antarctica were defined from photo-transects. A clear bathymetric pattern was evident, with two different communities at 15 and 30 m, and a transition area between 20 and 25 m. Using multivariate analyses, three faunal assemblages related to depth were defined and a strong association of some species, mainly predators and opportunistic necrophages, with M. Ice impact icebergs and anchor ice seems to be the major regulating factor of benthic assemblages in shallow waters.

Description: This perennial fern consists of a few loose leaves that develop directly from the rootstock. Infertile leaves are more common than fertile leaves. The infertile leaves are yellowish green to medium green, hairless, and ovate in outline; they are deeply pinnatifid for the most part, although their tips are more shallowly pinnatifid, while their bases are more pinnate. The central stalk or rachis of each infertile leaf is winged.

The spreading narrow lobes of the infertile leaves are generously spaced from each other; their margins are smooth to undulate and gently roll downward. Each infertile leaf has about 8 opposite pairs of these lobes; the upper lobes are ascending, the middle lobes are widely spreading, and the lower lobes are descending.

This paper focuses on the Early Pleistocene of China and Southeast Asia, where the Ailuropoda-Stegodon complex is considered to be a chronologically significant faunal association in the following period. However, the stratigraphic contexts of these local faunal complexes require clarification. Indeed, after one century of research to establish a regional biostratigraphy and in spite of the recomandations provided in the s, many geochronological surveys were undertaken in the s but many problems still exist.

Thus, as a first step, taking into consideration the uncertain nature of the geological, taphonomic and chronological data, this paper proposes a critical review of the validity of the associations of Stegodon and Elephas during the Early Pleistocene for this geographical area. Finally, it was necessary to expose what are the current problems before to try to solve them rather than to pursue an unfounded headlong rush.

This review concludes that very few reliable data are available and that high-level resolution MIS palaeoecological modelization is almost impossible, severely hindering any discussions of strict interaction between humans and proboscideans. Shibboleth Sign In. OpenAthens Sign In.

Vallonnet Cave France is a Lower Paleolithic prehistoric site with traces of hominin activities including lithic remains and cut-marks on mammal bones.

Here, we apply the uranium-lead U-Pb methods to two flowstones to date the intervening archaeological levels. The U-Pb data, coupled with paleomagnetic constraints, provide an age range from 1. The results conclusively demonstrate that Vallonnet Cave is one of the oldest European prehistoric sites in France with early hominin occupations associated with an Epivillafranchian fauna. Our understanding of hominin evolution, hominin migration and cultural change relies fundamentally on the establishment of accurate chronological frameworks.

Journal of Quaternary Science , 22 8 pp. The sequence of British faunas during the three successive warm phases of MIS 5 presents a challenging model in which the mammal faunas of the first two temperate phases, 5e and 5c is dominated by species of a classically interglacial character, while that of the final phase, sub-stage 5a, is dominated by bison and reindeer. This we see as the ‘cold fauna’ appearing in Britain during the cool isotope sub-stage 5b and subsequently isolated by the rising sea level of isotope sub-stage 5a.

These are a mottled silty mudstone facies facies A , a laminated shale facies facies B , and a laminated siltstone facies facies C. Facies A consists of variably bioturbated silty mudstones, muddy siltstones, and fissile shales. It developed in relatively shallow water conditions; mudstones were presumably deposited from suspension, and siltstone laminae and thin layers were formed by increased wave and current activity.

Mottling resulted from bioturbation by epifaunal and, particularly, infaunal benthic organisms. Within facies A, two subfacies are recognized: A i is mudstone dominated, and A ii is fine-grained siltstone dominated. Facies B consists of alternating laminae of undisturbed mudstone and fine-grained siltstone probably produced as a result of deposition from suspension during a temporary upward expansion of the oxygen-minimum layer.

Facies C consists of 0. Internally they are extremely variable, but all are interpreted as a result of deposition from storm-generated currents. The Ross Brook Formation formed on a shallow-marine, storm-influenced, subtidal inner—mid muddy shelf and is dominated by extensive but stratigraphically variable developments of facies A and facies C.
